Artfly Mayfly

Tied by Peder “Wiggo” Wigdell

Just as illustration bridges the gap between advertising and fine art, many fly tyers are creating fly patterns that transform utilitarian flies into art pieces. Peder Wigdell from Sweden used a number of materials to create this artful form. The delicate wings, tied Wallywing style, are mallard duck breast feathers. Wallywings, named for the technique’s inventor, Wally Lutz, are fashioned from a single bird’s body feather. The feather’s barbules are pulled back in the opposite direction from their natural position. Next, the barbules on each side are torn away from the central stem and secured to the hook. The remaining central stem is cut off, leaving two wings. The abdomen is clear tubing. The skills required to create such a fly are those of someone who has dedicated many years to the art of fly tying.

This is not meant to be a fishing fly, but an “artfly,” something to look at that conjures up dreams of the coming season. You can fish with it if you like, but it won’t hold up for more than one or two fish. On the other hand, if it is the fish of a lifetime, it may all be worthwhile.

Peder “Wiggo” Wigdell has tied flies for thirty-eight years. They have mostly been fishing flies, but for the last three to four years he has tied more and more artflies, just for fun. For another of his flies, see opposite page.
